Description
This is a seed head of the Gaillardia Pulchella flower. The Gaillardia Pulchella is also known by the common names, Firewheel, Indian Blanket or Blanket Flower. The flower is named for the 18th century French magistrate, Gaillard de Charentonneau who was a supporter of botany. By the way "pulcher", is a Latin word meaning beautiful or pretty. This photograph was taken at the Christopher D. Spiller wildflower project on Lake Thurmond (Clarks Hill Lake) near Clarks Hill, South Carolina.
