Description
What a piece of Georgia history! This private female liberal arts college was founded in 1849 as Forsyth Female Collegiate Institute. The school was renamed Monroe College in 1857 and later in 1898, it became affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention. Still not familiar with the name? It was changed again in 1907 to Bessie Tift College in honor of an alumna and wife of Henry Harding Tift, founder of Tifton, Georgia. The name was shortened to Tift College in 1956. In 1986, Tift College merged with Mercer University and operations at this location ceased in 1987.
