Description
In 1732, General James Oglethorpe ordered that Tybee Island Light Station on Tybee Island, Georgia be established. Noble Jones of Wormsloe Plantation, began work on the first day-mark and it was completed in 1736. It was octagon shaped and stood 90 feet tall. The structure you see today is actually the 4th lighthouse to rise above Tybee. At 145 feet, it is the oldest and tallest lighthouse in Georgia and one of the few remaining lighthouses from the colonial era. The light station contains several other historic out buildings including the caretaker's cottage. In this photograph, the lighthouse is draped in "Old Glory" in celebration of Veteran's Day.
