Description
The beautiful and elegant, Aplomado Falcon once nested in desert grasslands of the southwestern United States, but has rarely been seen north of the Mexican border since the early to mid 1900s. Aplomado is a Spanish word meaning "lead-colored", referring to the blue-grey areas found in their feathers. Aplomado Falcons are not migratory and like most falcons are bird hunters but they also prey on other flying animals including bats and insects. They usually hunt in pairs or in family groups working together to flush out and pursue their prey. It was placed on the Endangered Species List in 1986 but there have been recent attempts to reintroduce the bird into Texas and the southwest. Hopefully the Aplomado Falcon will be around for many future generations to enjoy. This falcon was photographed at a demonstration by the Winged Ambassadors, a Georgia group that seeks to promote the conservation and protection of these majestic birds and other birds of prey.
