Description
White Ibises are attracted to wetlands including swamps, mangroves, flooded pastures, freshwater marshes, and shallow ponds. They forage these wet areas looking for insects and crustaceans beneath the surface. During the nesting season, they nest in colonies in trees and shrubs near fresh water because nestlings cannot safely consume large amounts of salt. This photo was taken at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park in Augusta, Georgia.
Odd Facts:
When baby Ibises hatch their bills are straight and don't start to curve down until they are about 14 days old.
The University of Miami mascot is a White Ibis, called Sebastian the Ibis. It is said that the Ibis was chosen as the mascot because of its ability to withstand hurricanes, which is the name of the University of Miami's football team.
