Description
William Faulkner's words from Requiem for a Nun, "The past is never dead. It's not even past.", certainly ring true for this old store in South Carolina. Daniel Byrd McClendon Sr. lived from 1839 to 1903 and was a Confederate soldier who was severely wounded but survived the Civil War. On July 9, 1864, during the Battle of Monocacy in Maryland he was shot in the head, captured, treated for his wounds and then imprisoned for the remainder of the war. After the war, he returned to South Carolina, married and had five children. Luther Jack McClendon was born on September 12, 1877 to Daniel and his wife, Sidney Lucinda Sharpton. The 1930 census shows Luther living in Anderson, South Carolina while the 1940 census shows him living in Edgefield, South Carolina. He was listed as a farmer and merchant and sometime in the early 1900s he built and operated this general store located in the Red Hill community that still stands today.
