Artist's Description
This plant was intriguing and odd enough to capture my attention. This is the seed head of the Knautia macedonica (Macedonian Scabious) flower which is a somewhat short-lived perennial which has purplish-red, scabiosa-like flowers and deep green leaves. The plant is native to Central Europe and named for a German doctor and botanist Christoph Knaut (1638-1694) and Macedonia which is on the Balkan Peninsula. This one was photographed at the Grandfather Mountain pollinator garden in North Carolina probably because the attract butterflies.
