Description
Great Egrets are frequently seen standing still at the edges of the water, stalking their prey but during breeding season they nest and grow long feathery plumes used during courtship displays. During the late 1800s they were hunted almost to extinction for their fancy breeding plumage feathers. Thankfully these beautiful creatures survived! This image was taken at the Cypress Wetlands nature preserve in Port Royal, South Carolina.
