Description
The Manchester and Augusta Railroad purchased land from Jacob Martin Cope and in 1894 Cope Station was established. This photograph was taken in Cope, South Carolina, a town that time forgot. If you like backroads and old towns, this is the place to stop!
From https://www.sciway.net/city/cope.html:
Cope is located in Orangeburg County, southwest of the City of Orangeburg.
It is named for Jacob Martin Cope, a Barnwell County farmer who, in the 1890s, sold a portion of his land for the town and a train depot. Within a year or two, Cope had two churches, several shops, a grist mill, a cotton gin, and a planing mill – proof of how essential railroads were to growth in this area of the state.
Cope's train depot still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
