Description
The American alligator lives mainly in the southern United States and can be found in slow-moving rivers, ponds, lakes and swamps and can grow up to 11 or 12 feet long and weigh nearly a 1,000 lbs. They are social creatures and can often be found in groups called congregations basking in the sun or swimming.
Do alligators eat humans? Rarely and I am glad! Alligators are not picky about their meals and are mainly carnivores. They usually eat things like fish, birds, small mammals and other reptiles but they will also eat fruit. I was fixated on photographing a great blue heron who I though was about to snare his lunch until a passerby alerted me there was an alligator about 10 feet behind me. To say the least I did not stick around and socialize with the creature!
This photograph was taken at Brick Pond Park in North Augusta, South Carolina.
